Doug Ehlert
Co-Founder and Lead Instructor at New Brighton Music Academy

I started New Brighton Music Academy with a simple goal: to share the joy of music in a way that fits real life. Over the years I’ve seen students light up when they master a new song, whether it’s their very first scale on trumpet or their favorite pop tune on piano. That spark is why I teach.

As a performer, I’ve played across the Midwest, from orchestra pits and jazz festivals to weddings, restaurants, and concert halls. I’ve been lucky enough to share music in Chicago, Milwaukee, the Twin Cities, Lake Geneva, and plenty of places in between. That wide range of experiences shapes the way I teach: music is never just about notes on a page, it’s about connection, expression, and fun.

I hold a BA in Music from UW–Milwaukee and have been teaching for more than 20 years. My approach is flexible: lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether that means learning classical repertoire, exploring jazz improvisation, or simply playing for enjoyment.

New Brighton Music Academy offers in-home, studio, and virtual lessons in piano, trumpet, and music theory. Wherever you’re starting from, my aim is to help you grow your skills and your confidence while keeping music something you genuinely look forward to.
